Being a commando trained in ninja arts might seem a bit of a cool factor overkill, but that is exactly what Snake Eyes of the G.I. Joe movie is. With the recent movie madness in connection with the movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, it is little surprise that this comic book favorite has reached a larger mainstream audience. Kids and adults alike were impressed with the characters, and demand for costumes has gone up. If you are on a budget though, cheap Snake Eyes costumes are rather simple to drum up.

For cheap Snake Eyes costumes, the hardest part would be sourcing specific, characteristic items. Before we get to that, let us start with the basic costume and build our way up. Ironically, our process of building up starts at the top, meaning the head. All articles are black or close to black.  Snake Eyes wears a balaclava, and over his eyes is a visor. This visor is characteristic and is one of those aforementioned “hard-to-get” items. Next, over his torso he wears a body suit, with full-length sleeves and gloves. There are also several metal bands around his forearms. Across his back is a ninjato and scabbard. Across the abdomen are military-grade pouches, held by straps across the torso and shoulders for support. Around his waist is a belt with small pouches, and a holster with a tactical pistol. The pants are also form-fitting, and his footwear is a pair of rubber paramilitary boots.

Now, for cheap Snake Eyes costumes, one will want to look for the pieces individually. The body suit and pants can actually be substituted with a diving wet suit, as long as it is black all the way. The waist belt will give an illusion that there are two parts. Paramilitary gear like the balaclava, strap-on pouches and pouch belts can be bought at military enthusiast shops. In fact almost everything here can be bought in a shop that specializes in selling replicas of military gear.  Knives, and prop pistols can be bought in these shops too.

Now for the hard part. Props really make a costume, everyone knows that. Sometimes, merchandise based on a popular character’s costume will be sold on the market, but many of these are for children and adolescents. The special visor will be one of the key points of any Snake Eyes costume, but a cheap Snake Eyes costume may have to make do with hand-made substitutes. The sword is also particularly difficult to include in the costume, due to safety concerns and unique appearance. Snake Eyes uses a personalized sword, so getting one just like it is probably impossible.

Just to get it clear and straight: the critical elements of the SnakeEyes costume are the balaclava and visor, body suit, pants, and boots.  The visor in particular identifies the costume as Snake Eyes, so even discount Snake Eyes costumes should include it. Lastly, you can improve any costume by acting the character.  Snake Eyes is a taciturn person whose movements are flowing but still exuding strength, in line with his martial arts training. Have fun putting the costume together, and even more fun playing the part.
