Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow both served in Vietnam as part of a LRRP, the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol.

In one such mission, Storm Shadow risks his life to rescue Snake Eyes and thus both become sworn brothers. On returning home, Snake Eyes realizes that he has lost his entire family and goes to Japan where Storm Shadow lives to master the ninja arts and also find some solace from it. Snake Eyes slowly wins over the hearts of Storm Shadow’s clan, Arashikage and the Hard Master, Storm Shadow’s uncle, through his skills in wielding the sword and other weapons.

Storm Shadow becomes envious of Snake Eyes popularity and growing closeness with the Hard Master. He also realizes that the Hard Master views Snake Eyes as a candidate for leading the Arashikage clan. Snake Eyes becomes aware of this and does his best to downplay himself but it does not work. During this time, somebody assassinates the Hard Master mistaking it to be Snake Eyes.

Storm Shadow follows the fleeing assassin while the Arashikage clan starts believing that Storm Shadow killed the Hard Master out of jealousy. Snake Eyes, who had began to look upon the Hard Master as a father figure, takes a vow that he would remain silent until he avenges the death of the Hard Master. He fights Storm Shadow, who has now become a part of Cobra, one of the arch-enemies of G.I. Joe.

However, facts get cleared and Snake Eyes realizes that Storm Shadow is not the assassin of Hard Master and that he joined the Cobra only to learn the identity of his uncle’s killer.
